A shooting late Saturday in the neighborhood south of campus at the University of Dayton left one student hospitalized and sparked a campus shelter-in-place order that was lifted early Sunday morning.

Just before 11:50 p.m., officers from the UD’s Public Safety department and the Dayton Police Department responded to shots fired in the first block of Evanston Avenue. Multiple 911 callers reported hearing “pops” and identifying gunfire near the student homes, according to audio excerpts published by News Center 7 (WHIO).

The individual shot was confirmed to be a UD student and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, university officials said. The student’s name was not released, but UD President Eric Spina says the student is recovering with family.

In an email to campus, Spina said the incident “caused my heart to sink.” He went on to advise students not to spread misinformation or rumors.

During the police response, the university issued a limited shelter-in-place alert for the south neighborhood. The all-clear was announced at approximately 1:22 a.m. Sunday.

The investigation remains active. No suspect or vehicle descriptions have yet been publicly released. Authorities are canvassing the area, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses.

Motivations and causes of the incident remain unclear. The prevailing theory is that the shooter, who is unidentified but not thought to be associated with UD, argued with another non-UD student. Witnesses, according to local news and Spina’s message, say it escalated to gunfire. As of now, no UD students were involved in the altercation itself.

Spina said in his statement that UD Public Safety and the Dayton PD have been collaborating and have made “significant progress” in the investigation.
