Sports Editor of Flyer News introduces herself

Hello readers,

My name is Kylee Nickel, and I am proud to introduce myself as the Flyer News Sports Editor for 2026-27! My goal is for you, as the reader, to get to know more about me by the end of this article.

I grew up in good old Fairborn, Ohio, just about 20 minutes away from UD. Though, I have recently moved closer to campus for my third-year at UD. I have had a handful of jobs, with waitressing at a small family owned restaurant in West Carrollton, Ohio, being my current one for over a year. I am the youngest of three children. My older brother still lives in Fairborn, but my sister has made it to the capital of the United States, residing in Washington D.C.

My sister, also, attended UD and graduated in 2024 with a B.A. in Communication. She was the first person in my family to graduate from college, and I fully plan on following in her footsteps. We are proud to say that we’re both first generation college students in our family.

Some of my favorite things are reading, writing, collecting vinyls, watching movies and shows, going for walks, playing cards with my family, and hanging out with friends. I have never been one to turn down a trip to a big city like New York, Chicago, or visiting my sister in D.C. I know this is a controversial opinion, but I do not like the beach, sand is one of my worst nightmares.

Now no more talking about me as a person, I want to talk about me and my journey of becoming a writer.

I started off at UD as a business student, not sure what I wanted to do in the future. I have always loved to read and write, but I never thought of how I could turn my aspirations into a job. Business, for me, was never going to be the end goal, I HATE math, so I knew I could not do that for the rest of my life.

I decided to take CMM 330: Media Writing in my second semester. After, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I immediately changed my major to Communication with a concentration in Journalism as well as a minor in Media Production and a certificate in Sports Communications. I also ended up joining FN as a contributing writer that same semester. My goal has always been to share people’s stories to the world, because I believe that at least one person can relate, and that is why I do this.

Being given the opportunity to be the Flyer News Sports Editor means everything to me. As a woman wanting to go into sports broadcasting the stereotypes are always there and it is not easy, so I hope I can prove myself to all of you who enjoy reading about sports. I also want to give the UD women’s teams their spotlight in Flyer News alongside the men’s teams. In general, women’s sports do not get as much recognition and my goal is to change that this year on Flyer News.

I am very excited for this upcoming school year, and to work with these incredible writers. As student journalists, I hope we can share with you our commitment to making sure you know everything that is going on around our community.
