Football Update: Jack Cook And Offense Put Out Strong Performance In A Losing Effort

The Dayton Flyers football team made the cross-country trek this week to take on the San Diego Toreros in a Pioneer Football League matchup with conference title implications. The Flyers fell to the Toreros by a score of 36-34 to bring them to 3-4 on the season and 2-2 in PFL play.

The Flyers did not go quietly against the reigning PFL champions. In fact, they came out swinging and struck first on a 46-yard catch and run from redshirt freshman Jack Cook to junior Ryan Skibinski.

This was just the beginning of what would be a prolific passing outing displayed by Cook, who went 29-40 for 432 yards, four scores and a rushing touchdown in a losing effort. Cook was added to the Jerry Rice Football Championship Subdivision freshman of the year watch list earlier this week, and his performance showed exactly why he deserved to be added to this list

The Toreros responded on the ensuing drive, scoring off an 11-yard pass. After missing the point-after the Flyers clung to a one-point lead.

After a relatively casual scoring display in the first quarter, the Flyers and Toreros showed off why they are two of the most explosive offensive units in the PFL.

Cook found paydirt again in the second quarter by use of his legs, on an 11-yard rushing touchdown. However, the Toreros would rule the rest of the half, scoring 17 straight, to lead 23-14 at the half.

The Flyers came out of the break determined to not let the game get away from them, and they did just that. The defense held the Toreros scoreless and Cook found senior Adam Trautman for a 28-yard touchdown pass, putting the Flyers within striking distance entering the fourth quarter at 23-21.

The Toreros showed why they haven’t lost a PFL game since 2015, as they scored two more touchdowns on consecutive drives to begin the fourth quarter and after another failed extra point the Flyers trailed 36-21.

The Flyers did not go out quietly. They rallied together, and Cook put together two more scoring drives, with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Skibinski and a four-yard touchdown to Trautman for their second of the game as well. Unfortunately, after a missed two-point attempt, the Flyers and Cook couldn’t complete the fourth quarter comeback.
