Four Flyers garner weekly A-10 conference awards

University of Dayton athletes took home four Atlantic 10 Conference awards for their play last week, as announced by the league Monday, Feb. 24.

In baseball, sophomore pitcher Charlie Dant was a co-winner of the Pitcher of the Week award, while freshman pitcher Mark Giesler was Rookie of the Week.

Freshman pitcher Gabrielle Snyder also took home Pitcher of the Week honors in softball. Finally, junior guard Andrea Hoover was the women’s basketball Player of the Week.

Dant had a complete game win with Dayton’s 4-1 victory against Belmont University Sunday, Feb. 23, in Nashville, Tenn. Dant allowed seven hits and walked two while striking out seven for his second win in two starts this season.

Dant has a 2.25 ERA in his two starts, and his 16 innings pitcher leading all UD pitchers in the team’s first six games.

Giesler made his collegiate debut during UD’s 8-6 loss against Middle Tennessee State University to open its three-game swing across Tennessee Friday, Feb. 21. Coming on in relief to begin the sixth, Giesler pitched the final three innings, giving up only two baserunners and inducing five ground ball outs.

Snyder won her second A-10 award in the first two weeks of her career by posting a 3-0 record in three starts during the Tennessee State Tiger Classic, Friday through Sunday in Nashville, Tenn. Appearing in four of Dayton’s five games, Snyder threw 19 total innings. She gave up 10 runs, only six of which were earned, and struck out 10 while posting a 2.84 ERA for the tournament. She previously won the A-10’s Rookie of the Week award, Feb. 10.

Snyder is 3-1 this season with a 2.17 ERA and two complete games.

Hoover averaged 20.7 points, five rebounds and 5.3 assists in Dayton’s three wins at Saint Louis University, La Salle University and at home against Saint Joseph’s University to wrap up the A-10 women’s basketball regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament. She scored 29 points against SLU, going 11-for-17 from the field and playing all 40 minutes. In the Flyers victory over SJU, Hoover had 14 points to go with seven assists against just one turnover.

Hoover has scored in double figures in 21 of the team’s 25 games this season.
