The Pioneer Football League, of which the Dayton Flyers are a member, announced their intention to play a conference-only schedule in spring 2021 in a press release Monday.
The PFL Presidents Council has endorsed a six-game, conference-only schedule set to take place between March 13 to April 17. The six-game schedule allows for the conference winner to be eligible for the FCS Playoffs.
“The Council determined to move forward with a plan which provides a meaningful competitive experience for PFL football student-athletes,” the press release said. “The League fully recognizes that this is an aspirational plan given the current severe state of the coronavirus pandemic and the many unknowns in the coming months for the country, the diverse set of states in which our schools exist, and the PFL institutions themselves. Consequently, individual institutions may, at their sole discretion, choose to opt out of the PFL 2021 spring season at any time.”
PFL teams are also able to schedule non-conference opponents at “institutional discretion.”
In 2019, the Flyers finished 6-2 in PFL play (8-3 overall), tied with Drake and behind 8-0 San Diego.
