The Brain Health Collective, a partnership between the University of Dayton, The Dayton Foundation, and other local organizations, is highlighting brain health as the school year comes to a close.

The BHC is a regional initiative that connects healthcare providers, educators, and researchers to expand care and promote health equity.

In a press release, The Brain Health Collective warns that “large gatherings and high-volume drinking events can increase the risk of falls, collisions, and other head injuries.”

Traumatic brain injuries occur when a blow, jolt, or impact disrupts normal brain functions. Symptoms of these injuries include headaches, dizziness, confusion, and nausea, along with memory and balance problems. The BHC emphasizes how important early detection can be in the severity of these cases.

“Early recognition and care can improve recovery and reduce long-term complications.”

During end-of-year celebrations, the BHC urges students to watch for warning signs of potential brain injuries. Minor TBIs make up 80% of cases, but are often overlooked. The best way to do this is to check in with your friends, stay aware of your surroundings, and finally seek care if you notice something.

The BHC brings together 20 team members who serve on an advisory board and four specialized workgroups aimed at advancing brain health through research, education, and community programs.

The BHC works to inform students through access to: research publications and studies, local and online brain health tools, information on grants and other programs, volunteer opportunities, and educational and professional development.

For more information, resources, or to get involved, visit UD Brain Health Collective. The BHC is always looking for students who want to learn, volunteer, and help advance brain health on the campus and throughout the community.
