UD Alumna Eliminated From ‘America’s Got Talent’

Earlier this summer, we were proud to hear that UD alumna Callie Day appeared on season 14 of “America’s Got Talent.” Day, a former Walmart pharmacy technician, gained fame when a video of her singing went viral. The video has more than 2.5 million views and has been recognized by celebrities, including well known gospel singer Kim Burrell and “American Idol” winner Fantasia.
Day was left in awe when her video gained her recognition for her opera singing, as well as a band of loyal followers. These loyal followers would later defend Callie when she was sent home in an early August episode of the television talent show competition.
Music has always been a part of Day’s life, even before she was sprung into newfound fame. Day earned her bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in vocal performance, and she later earned her master’s degree in education with a music concentration from University of Dayton. The former Flyer is currently pursuing her musical career at the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre.
In an episode that aired in early August, judges Simon Cowell, Julianne Hough, Howie Mandel and Gabrielle Union decided to send Callie Day home.
Howie Mandel revealed, “We argued, and we ended with the decision that this is the end of the journey for you here. I am so sorry, Callie.”
In a later interview, Day reflected her disappointment that she did not make it further in the competition. She remained positive, however, stating, “through the good days and bad days” she was going to “sing through it all.”
Day’s Twitter fan base also had a lot to say about her elimination. Tweets criticized judges for their decision and argued she had the best voice on the show. Some Twitter fans went so far as to attribute Day’s elimination to her age compared to the younger competition.
While it is disappointing to see our fellow Flyer fall in the competition, her story still proves inspirational, showing that you’re never too old to achieve a dream. As Flyers, we can be proud to say that one of our own made it onto “American’s Got Talent” and was able to perform for millions. Despite this setback, we can be excited for Day as she continues her musical education and career.
