DAYTON, Ohio — University of Dayton Athletic Director Neil Sullivan released a statement Sunday evening regarding the eligibility of Flyers sophomore guard Adam Njie Jr.

The statement read: “The University of Dayton has been notified by the NCAA of potential eligibility concerns related to Adam Njie, connected to matters that occurred prior to his enrollment at the University. In light of these concerns and the ongoing review process, Adam will not be participating in athletic competition at this time.”

After the release of this statement, Flyer News reached out for more information; however, none was given.

After both UD’s announcement and Flyer News’ attempt to reach out, Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated reported that the review is “connected to the ongoing investigation of gambling-related activity in college basketball,” and that “it is unclear if Njie is under scrutiny from both the NCAA and federal investigators, or just the NCAA.”

Njie, a transfer from Iona, committed to UD on April 15th. While at Iona, he appeared in all 32 games, starting in 27 of them. He shot 41% from the field while averaging 12.2 points and 4.2 assists per game.

Njie was expected to play a key role for the Flyers, as in the exhibition game against Penn State, he played 24 minutes off the bench. Dayton has one remaining exhibition game, a home matchup with Bowling Green State University on Oct. 27, before the regular season begins Nov. 3 at UD Arena against Canisius.

The Flyers are already without guard Jaron McKie, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, as well as guard Jordan Derkack for the time being, as he missed the Penn State exhibition after sustaining an injury in practice.

The timetable for the review is currently unknown.
