The 2021-22 season began with a second place finish for the Dayton Flyers men’s golf team in the Eastern Kentucky Fall Intercollegiate.

Led by junior Kyle Schmidt, who finished second overall with (-8), the Flyers finished 4-under-par in the two-day event at The University Club at Arlington on a par 70, 6,653-yard course. Western Carolina finished well ahead in the 16-team field with a (-15) score, but only Jacksonville State (-2) joined Dayton and Western Carolina to finish under par.

Overall, these were the results for the Flyers:

2nd  Schmidt  68-66-68=202 (-8)
t-13th  graduate Hayden Zimmerer  70-70-71=211 (+1)
t-22nd  freshman Colin O’Rourke  71-71-71=213 (+3)
t-27th  sophomore Henry May  72-69-73=214 (+4)
t-43rd  sophomore Ethan Snyder  76-72-69=217 (+7)
t-43rd  senior Ryan Clements (ind.)  71-74-72=217 (+7)

“I’m very pleased with how the guys started the season,” head coach Gip Hoagland said after the final round. “A lot of great play. Everybody contributed on multiple levels. It’s great to see the guys come out of the gates making so many birdies. Western Carolina played extremely well on the back nine today and ran away from us at the end. Congrats to them on a job well done.

“Very happy with the way Kyle played, finishing as runner-up in his first event of the season. He picked up where he left off last year and had a great showing. Excited to get back at it next week at Marshall’s Invitational.”

Next up, the Flyers will play in the Joe Feaganes Invitational hosted by Marshall Sept. 13-14 at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia. During the 2019-20 season, the Flyers finished second out of 16 teams at this invitational.
