On Sunday, Dayton Flyers volleyball claimed their 15th Atlantic 10 championship with a dominant win over Fordham.
Before that, Dayton faced Duquesne in the semifinals on Saturday, at the Dukes’ UMPC Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Flyers were ranked No. 1 in the conference tournament and outlasted the No. 5 Dukes 3-2 to advance to the finals.
The team came back after losing the first two sets of the game, going on to beat the Dukes in the final three sets, 25-18, 25-23, and 15-7. Three Flyers had double-doubles in this game including senior Jamie Peterson, redshirt freshman Lexie Almodovar, and sophomore Livie Sandt.
Peterson tallied a team-high of 26 kills along with a career-high of 18 digs against the Dukes. This was her eighth double-double of the season.
Almodovar posted 21 kills and 11 digs, also recording her eighth double-double of the season.
Sandt, a setter for the Flyers, tallied 50 assists to go along with 11 digs against the Dukes. This marked her sixth double-double of the season.
Some other notable statistics were freshman blocker Alayna Yates’ eight blocks out of the team’s 15.5. Additionally, the Flyers tallied eight aces compared to Duquesne’s zero.
The Flyers then faced Fordham in the finals of the A-10 Championship and cruised over them 3-0 in a straight-set win. Their 15th tournament win set a league record in the Atlantic 10.
Sandt recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 35 assists and 13 digs.
Sophomore hitter Amelia Moore posted a .450 hitting percentage compared to Fordham’s .092 hitting percentage for the match.
Peterson tallied 15 kills, the most by all attackers, seven digs, and five blocks. She would go on to be named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player for the second year in a row. Freshmen Almodovar and Yates were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
