Flyer football secures third seat of 8-0 NCAA FCS teams
Calm yourselves, Buckeye fans. There’s an undefeated football team even closer to home. Dayton football defeated league rival Jacksonville 31-14 at home Saturday to improve to 8-0 on the season.
Redshirt first-year quarterback Alex Jeske threw for 180 yards and one touchdown, in addition to a rushing touchdown, to lead the Flyers to their fifth Pioneer Football League victory.
“In this game, we really wanted to come out to a fast start,” Jeske said after the win. “The key was just being aggressive and playing a hard game. We like to play fast and get the ball in our playmakers’ hands.”
“It’s very special for these young men to be able to say that they’re a part of an 8-0 team,” head coach Rick Chamberlain said in a postgame interview, noting that only three teams in the NCAA’s FCS boast an 8-0 record.
“It’s a great feeling,” Jeske said of his undefeated team, “but, then again, we know that we still have a lot of work to do.”
Waters and Campbell achieve career highs
In other Flyer sports news, the women’s soccer team capped off an 8-2 Atlantic 10 season with a win over Massachusetts Sunday. Seniors Nicole Waters and Ashley Campbell scored in Dayton’s win, with Waters netting two goals. Campbell’s goal was her 16th of the year, adding to her all-time record for career goals as a Flyer, which now stands at 62. Her goal in the 85th minute was assisted by Waters, who is adding to her own school record for career assists (54).
Waters was later named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week. She is also among the nominees for the women’s soccer Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes student-athletes who excel in character, community, classroom and competition.
Waters and Campbell led the Flyers to the number two seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which begins Thursday in Davidson, North Carolina.
Soccer remains undefeated in conference
The men’s soccer team is still unbeaten in the conference at 5-0-2. They finish up Atlantic 10 regular season play Saturday at home against Virginia Commonwealth University.
Junior defender Lalas Abubakar scored in the 81st minute Saturday against Fordham, leading the Flyers to a 1-1 draw with the Rams.
The A-10 men’s soccer tournament begins Thursday, Nov. 12 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
Flyers volleyball hits 18th consecutive victory
Finally, the volleyball team.
After starting the season 2-5, Dayton has rattled off 18 consecutive victories, including road wins this past weekend at Rhode Island and Fordham to improve to 20-5. They are a perfect 11-0 in the conference and have three more regular season A-10 games before the conference tournament starts Nov. 20.
Senior outside hitter Alaina Turner leads the Flyers with 4.16 kills per set and has 33 service aces on the season. Sophomore setter Jane Emmenecker leads the team with 9.92 assists per set.
The Flyers will play at the Frericks Center twice more this season—Friday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 8 against George Washington and George Mason, respectively.
