In Friday’s Atlantic 10 Softball Semifinals, the Dayton Flyers stormed out to an early lead in a 7-1 win over Fordham to advance to the A-10 Championship Game.
The scoring began in the top of the third inning, when Flyers junior third baseman Megan Gist hit a high fly ball that cleared the left field fence by a few feet for a solo home run and a 1-0 Flyers lead. After Gist’s third home run of the season, the Flyers loaded the bases with two outs, and freshman pinch hitter Taylor Erschen drilled a line drive into left center field, clearing the bases and increasing the Flyers’ lead to 4-0.
Two more Flyers crossed home plate in the top of the fourth inning, pushing freshman starting pitcher Addy Bullis’ cushion to 6-0.
The Rams gained a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a throwing error, but Bullis escaped from runners on first and second to keep the lead at 6-1.
One more run crossed the plate in the sixth for the Flyers, and Bullis stayed dialed in to finish a complete game after pitching 5 ⅓ innings on Thursday.
With the 7-1 win, the Flyers advanced to the A-10 Championship Game, needing to win only one game on Saturday to win the A-10 Conference.
