UD Democrats And Republicans React To SOTU Address

President Donald Trump delivered his first State of the Union address Tuesday and received an unsurprising mixed reaction.

The president covered a variety of topics in his speech, which lasted about an hour and a half. At one point, as Trump was expressing his happiness for the new tax bill, he referenced the owners of Dayton-based Staub Manufacturing, who were guests for the evening.

He also discussed his commitment to improving healthcare for veterans, investing more money in infrastructure and reforming immigration policies even further.

“It was interesting to hear Trump’s use of patriotism in relation to his immigration policy,” said junior Abigail Dibadj, vice president of UD College Democrats. “His message definitely resonated with his own base.”

Senior Chase Hite, editor-in-chief of UD College Republicans, agreed that Trump struck a chord with his party.

“This was the speech moderate Republicans have been waiting for from Trump ever since Election Day,” Hite said. “He was able to inspire his own base with policy ideas such as a strong stance against North Korea and the positive effects of our new tax plan while also reaching across the aisle on issues such as paid family leave and amnesty for DREAMers.”

An estimated 45.6 million people tuned in to watch the president’s address, according to NPR. This is the ninth highest viewership for a State of the Union address since 1993, behind Clinton, H.W. Bush and Obama.
