The men’s golf team has been looking forward to getting into the swing of what looks to be an exciting spring season.

The Flyers are looking to start the season hot as they finished in fifth place at the MAC/A-10 Challenge hosted at Lake Jovita Country Club in Florida on Feb. 5 and 6.

Just before heading down to the Sunshine State, head coach Gip Hoagland offered a preview of what’s to come with Flyer golf.

“The spring is going to look different,” Hoagland said, alluding to the fall schedule that proved to be a hindrance for UD.

The Flyers have a spring schedule that leaves time for ample rest and preparation, Hoagland said.

Senior Henry May is expected to make a major impact, having not missed a tournament in his career at UD.

Hoagland also mentioned sophomore Jacob Garland as someone to look out for, along with juniors Ben Cors and Collin O’Rourke.

Hoagland also talked up the impact of the Player Development Center at NCR Country Club in Kettering and the impact the facility has had since opening.

“The performance center is great,” said Hoagland. “Having a space like that with all the new technology and it being open year-round for both teams gives them a great space to practice especially during the winter.”

The facility at NCR Country Club “really opens up recruiting and being able to bring in southern players who are used to playing year-round.” The center has already helped bring in two southern players, he said, in sophomore Jacob Garland and freshman Ethan Stanford. Both call Tennessee home.

The transfer portal and NIL are things that are still catching up to colligate golf.

Hoagland said NIL has had little direct impact on the men’s team.

“There was one opportunity that one of our players had with Dayton 6th, but that was about it,” he said.

About the transfer portal, Hoagland said, “I definitely look, I look to see who’s out there, but we haven’t made any moves. I am more concerned about the guys we have here and keeping them here, I want to make sure our guys know we want them here at UD.”

Next up for the men is the Wexford Intercollegiate Tournament in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Feb. 19 and 20.
