Dayton volleyball played Fordham Sunday afternoon and came out with great energy. Redshirt freshman Alayna Yates put down the first point of the game, and the team kept moving forward from there. Fordham had too many little mistakes and couldn’t match the Flyer’s aggressiveness, specifically middle hitters Yates and redshirt sophomore Amelia Moore. With great shots in the middle of the court, Dayton ended up winning 25-13 with a hit off the block, keeping their strong lead.

The Rams came back with new momentum in the second set, keeping the score tight the whole game. Fordham had consistent blocks, and they were starting to keep up with the attacks from Dayton. They blocked Dayton’s right side, making the score 19-17 Flyers. A missed hit from Dayton gave the Rams their first lead of the game 21-20. Dayton wasn’t swinging as much as the first set and the ladies lost 25-20.

The teams were equally matched in the third set, and both were struggling to keep a run for points. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Lexie Almodovar had an overall great day, and she really brought the heat in the last two sets. Her hits were aggressive and a key part of the game, being a dominant force for their offense. Almodovar was ready at the net and had a great hit off an overpass making the score 23-18. Dayton’s scrappiness made all the difference in the third set, and they won 25-20 with a kill to the back row.

For the final set, the Flyers had a good start with consistently stronger serves. Graduate right-side hitter Mahalia Swink was able to effectively read the court all day and put the ball down where the Rams couldn’t cover. Almodovar was also a weapon for the team and had a killer back row attack making it 3-2. Dynda scores off the Fordham block making it 11-6, making it possible to break up Fordham’s momentum. The Rams tried to fight back, but Dayton had a strong block winning 25-16.

Despite the surprising win in the second set for Fordham, Dayton worked together and kept up their energy for the rest of the game. The Women’s Volleyball team continues their winning streak with this victory over Fordham, and are still undefeated in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Flyers play away on Friday at 6:00 pm against VCU.
