Dayton men’s basketball head coach Anthony Grant will have an altered coaching staff in 2021-22, as Anthony Solomon is expected to leave for Notre Dame and James Kane is officially returning to UD, Grant announced Tuesday.
Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports first reported that Solomon is expected to rejoin Mike Brey’s coaching staff (2000-03, 2008-16) as associate head coach. At UD, Solomon held the same position since Grant was hired in 2017. (Further confirmation of the move is evident as Solomon’s profile has also been removed from the Flyers’ roster page.)
While Solomon’s departure is not official yet, the move back for Kane is official. Kane has spent the last three seasons at Iowa State as an assistant for Steve Prohm.
“We’re excited to announce the addition of James Kane to our coaching staff,” Grant said. “James brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our program. Having served on our inaugural staff here at Dayton and in various roles with me over the past two decades, James also provides a familiarity with our coaches, support staff, and style of play. He is a relentless worker, teacher, & communicator, and excels as a builder of relationships and trust. He compliments our staff extremely well and will transition seamlessly into our culture and identity.”
Kane has been a staple working with Grant, first meeting Grant as a junior at the University of Florida. He then was part of Grant’s staff at VCU and Alabama. In the current Flyers head coach’s first season at UD, Kane was a big part of Grant’s staff and helped recruit Jalen Crutcher to UD in 2017.
