The women’s soccer team played the Saint Louis University Billikens in the Atlantic 10 Championship Nov. 6. Dayton, seeded second in the Atlantic 10 conference, was defeated by top seed Saint Louis.
This championship was the second time this season that the two teams competed, the previous game resulting in a Dayton loss, 2-1.
The Billikens scored first in the 20th minute, with a goal slipping right past Dayton’s goalie Batoul Reda, shot by Hannah Larson off an assist from Emily Groark. Just minutes before the end of the first half, Emily Gaebe gave SLU another goal, now leading the competition 2-0.
Despite Dayton’s strong forward and midfield, the Flyers could only get two shots on goal for the duration of the game versus Saint Louis’ strong defense. The Billikens added 2 more goals during the second half from Hannah Friedrich and Caroline Kelly. Saint Louis had 19 shots compared to Dayton’s 8. Saint Louis’ Lyndsey Heckel received a yellow card in the 69th minute.
The Flyers fell to SLU at the end of regulation, giving the Billikens their 5th consecutive A10 championship win.
The Flyers were hoping for an outside chance bid in the NCAA tournament on Nov. 7, but did not receive one. Dayton finished second in the Atlantic 10 conference with a record of 8-2, and an overall record of 16-4-1.
