Flyer sports set for packed Labor Day weekend

Four soccer games at Baujan, three volleyball matches at Frericks, two cross country teams racing and one football game under the lights mark a mammoth Labor Day weekend for Flyer sports.

In conjunction, the Red Scare is hosting an assortment of promotions and giveaways to incite attendance.

The men’s and women’s soccer teams kick things off Friday evening at Baujan Field with a doubleheader. The women take on Xavier University at 5 pm and the men face off against Saint Francis University at 8. Both squads are looking for their first wins of the season.

Flyer volleyball is hosting the Dayton Invitational in the Frericks Center this Friday and Saturday. UD will take on Xavier at 7 pm Friday evening and, play both Northwestern University (1 pm) and Chatanooga (7 pm) Saturday. Dayton is 4-0 on the season so far and defeated Xavier last year in Cincinnati.

Saturday morning, the men’s and women’s cross country teams will run in the Rich Davis Flyer 5K Challenge at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering. The men begin at 9:45 am and the women will run at 10:15. Last year, then-sophomore Emily Leonard won the Flyer 5K for the women, finishing in 18:01. She went on to be an All-Atlantic 10 selection for UD.

Saturday evening, Flyer football will kick off its new season at Welcome Stadium, taking on Central State University at 7 pm. The Flyers finished 10-2 in a stellar 2015 season that concluded with a home playoff game.

Students can take a shuttle from the G-Lot to Welcome Stadium starting at 5:20. At 5:50, buses will begin running every 10 minutes.

The action continues Sunday, at Baujan Field with another soccer doubleheader. The women will kick off against Purdue University at 1 pm and the men take on Belmont University at 4.

Red Scare will be holding a “Red Out Rally” Friday afternoon from 3-4:30 to get the student section excited for the action. There will be free food, an appearance by Dr. Spina and Xavier piñatas at the rally, according to an email sent out by the Red Scare.

Students are admitted FREE to all the games this weekend with a valid student ID.
