The University of Dayton women’s soccer got two goals from freshman forward Itala Gemelli, but fell to 22nd-ranked Saint Louis 3-2 in 2OT in their A-10 home opener Thursday.
The Flyers flew out of the gate, with a screamer of a shot by Gemelli from outside the box giving UD a 1-0 lead in the first minute.
However, the Billikens responded less than three minutes later with a header from a corner kick that went between goalkeeper and defender.
Both teams went scoreless over the first of the first half, but the Billikens got in front with a penalty kick in the 58th minute.
The Flyers were slower in responding than the Billikens were earlier in the game, but ten minutes later, a pass across goal from sophomore midfielder Jessica Sheldon to Gemelli was put into the back of the net to tie the score at 2.
There it would remain through the rest of the second half, and through the first overtime. But in the 106th minute of the game in the second overtime, the Billikens scored from a cross that was headed over sophomore goalkeeper Madelyn Dewey and into the goal to end the game.
With a 3-2 loss, the Flyers fall to 3-3-1, and 0-1-1 in A-10 play, and face St. Bonaventure away next on Sunday at noon.
