It’s official folks, the first regular season game played in the newly renovated UD Arena is in the books. The Flyers matched the new arena’s looks with an impressive 82-60 opening night victory over Lipscomb University.
From the first tip, Dayton took control over the pace of the game and refused to look back. Dayton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and had control for the entirety of the game.
The lady Flyers dominated the Bison at the charity stripe, cashing in on 26 of their 36 free throw attempts, dwarfing Lipscomb’s total of 10 on 11 attempts. Redshirt junior Erin Whalen led the way going five-for-five from the line en route to her team high 19 points off the bench. Kyla Whitehead assisted in the winning effort by pouring in 12 points on 4-6 shooting all the while tallying 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
Shakeela Fowler sealed the game for the Flyers in the third quarter after going on her own 5-0 run, ending with her drawing an offensive foul, to force the Bison to a 52-36 Flyer lead and a Bison timeout. Fowler finished in double figures, racking up 11 points in her 24 minutes of play.
The Flyers put together a team effort to defeat the Bison, with every player dressed putting a notch in the scoring column.
The Flyers are back in action this Saturday, as they head up north to face the Toledo Rockets for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
