University Celebrates International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women from the past, present and future. Thousands of events are held worldwide to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.
The Center for International Programs, the Women’s Center and Flyer Enterprise joined forces to host the first Global Sisterhood Reception at UD. Men and women around campus came together to honor the ways women at UD have contributed to our global community, in sisterhood and connection.

Guests were invited to thread one strand of fabric into the loom to complete a tapestry, suggesting we all bring unique aspects to our global sisterhood.
A quote from Maya Angelou was displayed near the tapestry: “We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.”

The Center for International Programs and the Women’s Center took the opportunity to honor four students who have made great contributions in and out of the UD community. Emily Monczynski, Yidi Cao, Devon Dubiel and Shahad Mohammed M Alqahtani were all recognized.
In the past, the Center for International Programs had more passive celebrations for International Women’s Day. This year, they wanted to have a public event to publicly and outwardly recognize women today and every day.
