SGA allocates $30,000 to approved student special requests

The University of Dayton Student Government Association began hearing special requests for funding at their weekly meeting Sunday, Oct. 27.

Special requests are proposals sent by students or organizations who may not have met the requirements of the budget month, said vice president of finance and junior management information systems and finance major Allie Michel.

Michel said SGA has $30,000 to offer students submitting special requests. Any funds not used after Senate approval must be returned to SGA, she said.

A sum of $630 was granted by the Senate to support the Marianist Global Game Committee who will be hosting a soccer event at Friday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. at Stuart Field to bring together students of diverse backgrounds.

The Senate also approved $2,000 toward a presentation by Lori Hart, a risk management speaker, sponsored by members of
Pi Beta Phi and Pi Kappa Phi. The initial request was for $3,000.

Dance Marathon requested $500 to purchase T-shirts and rent the UD RecPlex main gym for the event Saturday, Nov. 9. The Senate denied the group’s request.

With 13 Senate members present, a majority of seven Senate votes was needed to approve special requests.
Following each approved event, the group must provide receipts showing how SGA funds were used.

SGA also approved efforts by the Senate to inform students about mitigating circumstances through an event or multimedia campaign. Additional approvals included an expansion of a prayer space for Islamic students, and potential extension of study hours prior to exam week in Roesch Library.

SGA’s next meeting will be at Sunday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. in the Kennedy Union ballroom.
