Women’s basketball update: Dec. 30

The Dayton Flyers women’s basketball team snapped a 10 game losing streak to open the season with a 94-58 victory against Cedarville University, a Division II program, at UD Arena on Thursday. 

Tamika Williams-Jeter, who was hired in March after Shauna Green departed to Illinois, earned her first victory as head coach of the Flyers. It was also the team’s first game in 18 days. 

Mariah Perez led Dayton by contributing 20 points on 9 of 13 shooting. Anyssa Jones added 19 points while shooting 7 of 13 from the field. Sydney Freeman finished with 18 points and a season high 11 assists. Arianna Smith finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for the Flyers (1-10). 

Dayton shot a season high 58.3% from the field and made a season best 10 of 24 (41.7%) from behind the three point arc. Cedarville (2-8) lost its sixth straight game. 

Following a 57-45 loss on Dec. 11 at Toledo, which dropped Dayton to 0-10,  the Flyers failed to win a game against Division I non-conference opponents before securing the win against Division II Cedarville. 

Dayton opens Atlantic 10 Conference play at 3 p.m. New Years Day on the road at George Mason (7-6) and then plays at Duquesne (10-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Flyers will host Fordham on Jan. 8 for its A10 home opener.
