Men’s Golf 

The Flyers men’s golf team finished fourth at the Yestingsmeier MAC Match Play Championship this weekend. 

The two-day event was hosted by Ball State at Lake Jovita Country club on the South Course at par 72. 

The Flyers started off strong with a win over Ball State before falling to Eastern Michigan and Drake. 

Senior Ryan Clements was ranked sixth among the field with a team-high 34 pars. Junior Kyle Schmidt led the team with 14 birdies placing him third in the field. 

Despite the team coming out of winter and having to practice inside, head coach Gip Hoagland is pleased with how the team performed and has the knowledge on what the next steps are for the Flyers.

Men’s Basketball 

On Wednesday night, the men’s basketball team shot a season-best of 60% from the field defeating Duquesne 75-74 at home. 

Dayton improves their A10 standings to 8-3 while Duquesne drops to 1-8. Nine Flyers scored at least six points, with redshirt sophomore Drew Swerlein landing his first career basket in the final minutes of the game. 

The arena went wild after senior Christian Wilson scored his first three pointer of the season, putting the game out of reach for the Dukes. 

On Saturday, the Flyers defeated the George Washington Colonials by nearly 30 points at UD Arena. 

Every Flyer saw playing time late in the second half as Dayton kept up with the strong lead. The Flyers are now 9-3 in A10 play with the conference championship only a few weeks away. 

Kobe Elvis led the team in scoring with 13 points, six of them from the field. Elvis has scored in the double digits in nine of his last 10 games. 

Malachi Smith tied the freshman record for the most steals in a season with 48 total and three against the Colonials. 

Softball 

The Flyers softball team opened their season in the Sam Houston’s Bearkat Classic against Houston Baptist and Wichita State on the first day. 

Dayton fell to Houston Baptist (0-2) in the tournament’s first game on Friday. Senior Kesley Gumm recorded six strikeouts, one of her Dayton career high. 

In game two against No. 25-ranked Wichita State, the Flyers fell 13-5 in the afternoon. 

On her first-inning grand slam, sophomore Kara Gunter, collected four RBI’s while Emily Daniel and Emma Schutter posted multi-hit games. 

Head Coach Cara LaPlaca stated that the women made significant progress in their offensive production on day one of the tournament. 

On the second day of the Bearkat Classic, Dayton defeated host Sam Houston with a 6-5 victory after dropping to South Dakota 8-2 earlier that morning. 

In game two against Sam Houston, junior Nicolette Papavasiliou drew two of the seven walks of the game. 

To close out the weekend, the Flyers fell to Houston in five innings. Dayton moves to 1-4 on the season as Houston improves to 3-1 overall. Senior Alyssa Cacini snatched her first multi-hit game of the season with two hits.

Track and Field 

The Track and Field team traveled to Kent State University Friday and Saturday to compete at the Doug Raymond Invitational. 

Lainey Studebaker ran a personal best in the 5k with a time of 16:41.19, a UD top 3 mark all time for indoor. Sophomore Abby Carter won the mile with her best time of the season at 5:03.59. In the 3000m run, senior Emily Sreenan won the event with a season-best time of 10:02.26s.

On the throws side, graduate student Taylor Flight placed second overall in the weight throw with 17.54 meter. 

First-years Chante Clinkscale and Kaira Granger dominated the 200m and 60m dash. Clinkscale broke her own record in the 200m, winning the event outright with a 24.22s finish. Granger placed fourth with a personal best of 25.10s, third in the UD record book.

In the 60m finals, Granger ran a quick 7.63s, her second-best time in the event this year. Chante won the 60m sprint overall posting a time of 7.47s. 

The men’s cross country joined the women to compete this weekend. Junior Andrew Schuster won the 5000m with a time of 14:48.08s. In the mile run, sophomore Tristan Karnes placed seventh overall with a time of 4:19.77. 

Sophomores Bryce Conley and Sam Duncan placed third and fourth overall in the men’s 3000m run.

The Flyers will compete in their last indoor regular season meet next weekend at University of Findlay at the Flag City open. 

Men’s Tennis 

The men’s Tennis team fell in a close match to Ball State Saturday night at home. The Flyers snatched singles victories from redshirt fifth-year Steven Karl, junior Connor Bruce and junior Matt DeMarco. 

At the beginning of the match, Dayton dropped the doubles point losing in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. 

Bruce took down Ball State’s Thibault de Negri in singles play, winning his 32nd career singles match and tieing with Will Harper for 25th in program history. 

DeMarco got Dayton up on Court Three (2-1) winning in straight sets against Ball State’s Nathaniel Webster. In No. 5 singles, Karl scored the third point for the Flyers to put them one point away from taking the match. 

Ball State took the points on Court Two and Six to tie the match at 3-3. Harper took Ball State’s Chris Adams to a third set to force a tiebreak, ultimately falling at the end of the last set. (7-3) 

Women’s Basketball 

To wrap up the week for the Flyers, the women’s basketball team faced a tough loss against VCU 60-58. 

This is the first conference loss for the women, snapping their 13-game winning streak that started back in December. 

At the start of the game, the defensive side worked effortlessly to keep the Flyer’s around, allowing only one bucket in the first six minutes of the game. 

The Flyers grabbed 50 rebounds and all seven that played scored at least one point. The women shot their second lowest total in A10 play at 37 percent and allowed 17 turnovers.
