Women’s Basketball
The Flyer women’s basketball team headed to Davidson College last Sunday, Jan. 30, earning their tenth win in a row with a 70-60 victory in Atlantic-10 play.
Dayton returned home to UD arena on Wednesday to host Duquesne on National Women and Sports Day. The Flyers extended their winning streak to 11 with a 60-54 win against the Dukes.
Graduate Student, Erin Whalen, stated in the post-game interviews that playing on a holiday celebrating female athletes was in the back of their minds before stepping onto the court.
With February being Black History Month, the team stepped onto the court wearing matching T-shirts designed by Araion Bradshaw and Amari Davidson. The shirts stand as another reminder that they are playing for something bigger than themselves.
To wrap up the week, the women’s team beat George Mason University by 40 points on Saturday afternoon. (84-44)
The Flyers remain undefeated in conference play and tie for the eleventh longest win streak in program history.
Men’s Basketball
To tip off the week for the men’s basketball team, the Flyer’s beat VCU Wednesday night 82-52. The Flyers now have sole possession of second place in the A10.
In the last few seconds of the first half, Dayton scored back-to-back shots to take a 15-point lead. DaRon Holmes 11 and Kobe Elvis both set career highs in scoring with 21 and 20 points.
On Saturday, Dayton’s three-game winning streak was broken with a 72-61 loss to Saint Louis. This loss dropped the Flyers to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in A10 play.
For the second game in a row, Kobe Elvis scored a career-high of 20 points. Redshirt sophomore Drew Swerlein scored his first point of the season with 26 seconds remaining in the second half.
Men’s Tennis
On Friday night the men’s tennis team beat Youngstown State 5-2 at South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg, marking 17 straight wins at home for the Flyers.
This is the fifth victory in a row for the Flyers with their record now sitting at 5-3 on the season. Max DeCurtins and Matt DeMarco opened the match with a win in the doubles point.
Youngstown took the No. 2 doubles, leaving the last point up to senior Will Harper and junior Connor Bruce. Harper and Bruce defeated the Youngstown pair 7-6.
Moving into singles play, Matt DeMarco won in straight sets over Javi Pla (6-4, 6-1) to extend the lead to 2-0.
Ronit Hiryur scored a win for Dayton in No. 2 singles and Eric Perkowski finished off with a win on Court Six.
Women’s Tennis
UD women’s tennis lost 6-1 against Marshall University on Saturday at South Regency Tennis Center.
After the opening match point went to Marshall, Dayton picked up a 6-4 win on court two with Elizabeth Hamilton and Paige Kompa’s victory in doubles play.
Heading into singles play, Hamilton took the first set against Liz Stefancic before falling in the second set. Hamilton gave Dayton the point after defeating Marshall’s Liz Stefancic in a tiebreaker 11-9 in the third set.
