Men’s basketball beats Southern University 69-60 heading into the holidays

University of Dayton Men’s Basketball team snatched a 69-60 victory over the Southern University Jaguars Tuesday night at UD Arena.

Toumani Camara scored the first points for the Flyers to open the game for the third time this season. Early on, Dayton’s defense held Southern from scoring into the first media timeout until a 14-4 run by SoU cut the Flyers lead to 19-17 with nine minutes remaining in the 1st half.

Freshman DaRon Holmes ll scored the first points in the second half extending the Flyers lead to 15. The Jaguars closed the gap into single digits with a 23-5 run of their own and forcing the Flyers to commit seven turnovers leaving the score at 62-58 with 1:44 left in the game.

With 22.9 seconds remaining, Dayton led 67-60 after redshirt freshman Kobe Elvis snatched a layup and the teams traded free throws.

Elvis tied his career best with 15 points and four assists along with Holmes ll setting a career high of four assists.

Up next the Flyers will begin their conference season on Dec. 30 against Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
