Flyers volleyball wins two of three in Flyer-Raider Invitational

The Dayton volleyball team hosted the first match of the Flyer-Raider Invitational this past weekend at the Frericks Center against Wright State.

Despite taking a 2-0 lead over the first two sets and holding strong until the final set, Wright State won a tight final set 16-14. After five long sets, the Flyers couldn’t secure their defense losing 3-2. Sophomore Livie Sandt stood out in the first invitational game by recording her career-high of 52 assists and 17 digs. 

Wright State’s McLin Center then hosted the Flyers against Illinois State Saturday afternoon. The women came with reinforced energy and secured 3 set wins in a row against the Cardinals for head coach Tim Horsmon’s 300th career win at Dayton. This quick win was a result of the amazing leadership on the team, specifically senior Jamie Peterson. She started the first match off strong with 10 kills, setting the pace for the rest of the game, and was named to the All-Invitational team (along with Sandt) and Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. 

The last game was later that night against Central Michigan back at the Frericks Center, and the women kept the same intensity as earlier in the day. Star redshirt freshmen outside hitter Lexie Almodovar was a key player against CMU, leading attackers with a .441 hitting percentage. The great assists and kills led the Flyers to a 3-0 win, securing their second win of the day. This final match makes the women’s record 4-4 before the conference begins. 

After an eventful Flyer-Raider Invitational, the volleyball team will continue their non-conference games next weekend at the Michigan Invitational at Cliff Keen Arena.
