Dayton Flyers men’s golf sophmore Kyle Schmidt finished six-under par at the 2021 Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate at NCR Country Club in Kettering, leading the Flyers to the title in the 54-hour event.
The Flyers finished four strokes ahead of second-place Bowling Green with scores of 290-269-276 over the three rounds (875 total). Schmidt (69-65-70=204) tied with Cleveland State’s Zak Supelak (72-63-69), but carded a birdie on the first playoff hole for medalist honors.
Schmidt, junior Ryan Clements and freshman Henry May each carded an eagle, freshman Ethan Synder parred 40 holes, second-most among the field.
“The guys played great this week,” head coach Gip Hoagland said. “(We) had a rough start in round one but fought real hard and had a phenomenal second round shooting 11 under par to get back into it. Today the team played solidly across the board and it was a full team effort. We are proud of the teamwork from beginning to end but it is also nice to have an individual win the event as well. Kyle played exceptionally well yesterday and very steady today. He really stepped up on the playoff hole, hitting one of the best golf shots you could on the drive. Really happy for the whole team. They have been working so hard and are getting better and better every day.”
The event win is the Flyers second straight after winning the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C., March 12-14.
Dayton will be heading to State College, Pa., for the Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State April 17-18. The two-day event will be played at Penn State Golf Course.
