BREAKING: Vaccine clinic at UD arena cancelled

The FDA recommended on Tuesday to pause administering Johnson & Johnson vaccines over side effects concerns.

The University of Dayton announced today that the COVID-19 vaccination clinic scheduled to occur on Wednesday, April 14 at the UD Arena has been cancelled until further notice. 

In an email from the UD Announcement Mailbox, the Path Forward Team said the decision to cancel the clinic comes from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warnings to pause federal clinics that are administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Federal health agencies made this call after six recipients of the single-dose vaccine experienced blood clots roughly two weeks after receiving their doses. Almost seven million people in the U.S. have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine thus far. 

All six cases of blood clots have occurred in women between the ages of 18 and 48 years old. According to the New York Times, one woman has died, and another in Nebraska was hospitalized in “critical condition.” 

“While a concern and worthy of investigation, the risk appears to be exceedingly small, and it is not confirmed it is even related to the vaccination,” said Dr. Steve Burdette, the medical director of infection prevention for Miami Valley Hospital and member of the Path Forward’s medical advisory panel. 

Burdette said that symptoms of blood clots can be pain and swelling in the legs, chest pains and shortness of breath.
