University of Dayton men’s basketball redshirt senior guard Rodney Chatman entered the transfer portal Tuesday.

The 2020-21 season was a battle for Chatman, who missed six weeks six weeks after right hand surgery on Jan. 6. The Litonia, Ga., native played in 12 games and started 11, averaging 7.9 points, 3.8 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, and shot 44 percent from the field.

In his two years at Dayton since transferring from Chattanooga (sat out the 2018-19 season), Chatman has become well-known and well-liked by Dayton fans for his defense, and was named the co-winner of the Steve McElvene award — which goes to the Flyers’ best defender — alongside Trey Landers last year.

Simply put, Chatman was an important part of the Flyers’ historic run last year, but with a class heavy with guards coming in, Chatman goes into the future with options that he will be weighing.

Chatman addressed his decision to Flyer Nation in a tweet Tuesday afternoon.

Chatman is the second Flyer to enter the transfer portal, after freshman guard Luke Frazier did the same Monday.
