Two Miami University Students in Isolation Test Negative for Coronavirus

Two Miami University students who exhibited coronavirus symptoms after returning from China tested negative for the virus, according to an announcement made Sunday by Ohio health officials. 

·       Miami University announced last week that two individuals who reported symptoms of the coronavirus and who had recently visited China during winter break were placed in isolation away from campus. 

·       The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tested if the two individuals were infected with the coronavirus; health officials said that “…unless someone has recently traveled from China or been near someone ill with the new virus….” the risk of infection is low. 

·       University of Dayton officials said last week they communicated with faculty, staff and students from China and anyone who was scheduled to travel to China. 

·       Symptoms of the coronavirus include runny nose, cough, sore throat and fever, according to the CDC. Protections from the cold and flu also can reduce one’s risk of the coronavirus. Click here for a list of prevention tips. 

·       The coronavirus originated in China. There are more than 14,000 confirmed cases in 23 countries, according to the New York Times. There have been more than 300 deaths, the vast majority in China. California officials announced the ninth confirmed case of the coronavirus in the U.S. on Sunday.
