Double 18 Lounge Makes Its Debut At Timothy’s

Wednesday marks one week since the Double 18 Lounge, Timothy’s newest second floor renovation, has been opened to the public. Recent additions to the beloved bar’s second floor include an upgraded bar area, lounge style seating, a deck overlooking the student neighborhood and large windows facing Patterson Homestead. Handcrafted cocktails and a food menu are now offered to customers, including Double 18 sliders and Tim’s tater tots.

Here are some Tim’s Tots with Steak Sliders: the first the #3 Holy Guacamole (pepper jack, bacon, guac and lettuce) and the second the #6 Royale With Cheese (American, egg, bacon, lettuce and maple syrup).

Marty Brown and Paul Kennel, UD graduates and owners of Timothy’s since 1996, had every intent of opening a second floor lounge since they bought the bar. Due to ordinances and restrictions, that dream was delayed until now.

“We know Tim’s is the place where students come late night to dance and have a good time,” Kennel said.

“We also know Tim’s becomes super crowded and people tend to leave when that happens. We wanted to open the second floor to make it more laid back and relaxed. We want the Double 18 Lounge to have that true neighborhood bar feel.”

In the duo’s first month of owning the bar, they found a neon sign dating back to the 1950s that said “Double 18 Lounge.” That sign served as inspiration for this renovation as the owners met with Dayton based architects, UD alumni and the University to construct a vision and start the renovation project. The newly restored sign proudly sits at the entrance of the lounge.

Looking toward the future, the owners envision a surplus of opportunities for events and gatherings in the Double 18 Lounge. Kennell can see the lounge and its balcony being used for live acoustic music nights in the summer, college class reunions and UD students or alumni celebrating a Flyer win after a sporting event.

The duo is open to any and all opportunities to best serve their customers, especially the Flyer community.

“Even though Marty and I own Tim’s, the bar really belongs to the University and the students,” Kennel said.

“We’ve seen so many people visit the bar and tell us ‘I met my wife here,’ or ‘I had my first kiss here,’ or ‘I remember celebrating a Flyers win here.’ We don’t want to take that away. Even though the Double 18 Lounge is a different vibe, it’s still a compliment to Tim’s and that’s really important to us.”

The Double 18 Lounge is now open from Wednesday to Friday, opening at 4 p.m. and Saturday, opening at noon. For more information about the lounge, follow Timothy’s on Twitter here and Instagram here.
