Men’s Basketball Update: Flyers Fall To Saint Joe’s After Soaring High Against VCU, Look To Rhode Island Saturday

There are a lot of words that you could use to describe Dayton’s men’s basketball team this season; “predictable” and “consistent” would not be two of those words.

Days after scoring a season-high 106 points against VCU, the Flyers travelled to Philly and got beaten by Saint Joseph’s 81-65 to bring the team to 9-9 on the season.

UD’s offense couldn’t get itself going on Wednesday night shooting only 37.1 percent from the field.

“We’re still working things out,” said freshman guard Jalen Crutcher. “We just couldn’t make any shots.”

By “we”, Crutcher really meant his teammates, as he had no trouble getting his shots to fall Wednesday night. Crutcher was the one positive to come out of the game as he dropped a career-high 23 points. He’s adapted well to playing at a collegiate level, having hit double-digit points in four of the Flyers’ last five games.

“It’s just basketball at the end of the day and I’m feeling more confident,” Crutcher said.

It’s not going to get any easier for the Flyers on Saturday when the Atlantic-10 leaders, Rhode Island, come to town.

Rhode Island is currently 14-3 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in conference play, due in no small part to their strong backcourt of Jared Terrell and E.C. Matthews, who combine for around 30 points per game.

Senior guard Darrell Davis is still staying confident, “We’ve gotta come out tough, because we know they’re a tough team to play. If we can do that we can come out with a victory,” Davis said.

The Flyers will be looking to get back on track at UD Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m.
