The University of Dayton women’s volleyball team defeated Miami University Tuesday night, 3-1 at their first home match of the 2016 season at Frericks Center.
Faithful Flyer fans and students alike filled the recently-dedicated Hausfeld court, buzzy with energy as the team made their home debut for this season.
The Flyers have started their season strong, defeating the University of Toledo 3-0, Southern Illinois 3-1, and Wright State University 3-0 during the Wright State Holiday Inn Invitational last weekend. With the win over Miami, the Flyers are now 4-0.
“I think we were just focused on getting better as a team, we’re a very young team, so I feel like it was more about taking that weekend and taking those wins and trying to use those wins as a tool to get better,” said junior middle blocker Amber Erhahon.
During the match, Erhahon recorded a career-high of 20 kills, leading the way for the Flyers. Sophomore defensive specialist Margo Wolf set a career high in digs, totaling 31, as did junior defensive specialist Maggie Schutter with 28.
The dynamic and makeup of the team has drastically changed this season compared to last fall as there are no seniors currently on the roster.
“We are a young team, so I think energy is a really big thing for us,” said Erhahon. “Our raw talent is going to drive us this year.”
This week, Erhahon and Wolf were honored with Atlantic 10 awards, being named Player of the Week and Co-Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
“It was definitely super exciting,” said Wolf. “ But I wouldn’t have been there without my teammates, they really helped me and just pushed me on and off the court so I’m thankful for them and wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
The team will host the Dayton Invitational on September 2-3 at Frericks Center against Xavier, Northwestern, and Chattanooga.
“Just to continue to get better everyday, one step at a time,” Wolf said. “Get one percent better each day and we will be ready by Friday.”
