Sophomore guard Jayla Scaife recorded a career-high 24 points (8-16 FG, 4-7 3FG) to help Dayton end their two-game losing skid in a 82-54 blowout win over James Madison Sunday afternoon at UD Arena.

This was also Scaife’s second double-double of the season as she corralled 11 rebounds in 26 minutes.

The squad improves to 6-3 after some struggles proceeding a 4-0 start.

Dayton played stellar defense throughout and forced James Madison to shoot only 26 percent from the field and just 13 percent from behind the arc.

The Flyers led the entire game and had four players in double figures, including guards JaVonna Layfield and Lauren Cannatelli who both finished with 13 points.

The game was filled with Dayton scoring runs as the Flyers led by as much as 28 in the fourth quarter. Dayton even ended the game on a 12-2 run.

Notable Highlights…

Senior guard Jenna Burdette has scored in double figures in all but one game this season (nine points against Virginia on Nov. 19)

Layfield grabbed 14 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season. She is averaging a double-double on the year with 10.3 points and just under 11 rebounds.

Dayton shared the ball and strung together 16 assists. This is the fifth game of the season where they have 15+ team assists. The Flyers are 4-1 in those games.

What’s next…

The Flyers will head down to where they make the best gumbo Wednesday for the New Orleans Shootout. They will first face No. 22 South Florida and then Mississippi Valley State on Thursday.
