Seniors lead the way for Flyers

Both the Dayton men and women’s soccer teams welcomed the start of Atlantic 10 play earlier this month.
The men are halfway through their conference slate with a record of 3-0-1, pushing their overall record to 8-4-2. The Flyers played their first home match in nearly a month on Saturday night and returned to a chilly Baujan Field with a 5-0 victory over La Salle.
Senior midfielder Amass Amankona scored a hat trick for the Flyers, including two first-half goals within just over three minutes of each other.
Another senior midfielder, Alex Amankwaah, had his best game of the season, scoring a goal directly off of his own corner kick and assisting on three other Dayton goals.
The Flyers’ conference success so far is due to their ability get positive results while traveling. The team’s first three conference matches ended up being on the road, where they beat Duquesne and Saint Louis and tied George Mason.
The men were originally supposed to play two in a row on the road to start A-10 play, and then come home Oct. 10 to face Saint Joseph’s, but that match had to be postponed until Oct. 28 due to Saint Joseph facing travel issues.
The shift in scheduling now means that, counting Saturday’s match, four of the team’s last five games will be at home.
The women are 4-2 so far in conference play and 6-9 overall. They began the A-10 season 3-0 and then lost two road matches in a row before coming back home on Sunday and taking care of Fordham, 3-1.
Campbell has scored seven of her 11 goals this season in A-10 action, including four in the last three games.
Waters assisted on all three Dayton goals against Fordham, and similarly to Campbell, has recorded seven of her 11 total assists during conference play.
The women head to Rhode Island on Thursday to take on the Rams, while the men will host Massachusetts on Saturday.
