After beating Duquesne on Wednesday, the men’s basketball team is focused on solidifying another win against conference-rival VCU.  Tipoff is at 6 p.m. against the Rams in VCU’s Siegel Center in Richmond, Virginia.

Dayton (11-12, 5-6) crushed VCU (14-10, 6-5) 106-79 on Jan. 12 at UD Arena, but Flyers’ coach Anthony Grant made clear that Saturday’s game will not be a continuation.

“The habits we build through what we do repetitiously in practice and what we learned from every game that we play has to carry us through,” Grant said.

“We have to understand every game is going to bring a different challenge and we have to be ready for that.”

Senior guard Darrell Davis, averaging 16.6 points per game, particularly enjoys playing VCU because of his connection with Rams’ forward Justin Tillman — the two played AAU basketball together.

“I know he wants revenge because we beat them bad here,” Davis said. “They are going to cause a lot of havoc, and play the same defense they always play. We just have to execute.”

VCU will be looking to get back on track after now dropping two games in a row after losing to Richmond in the final seconds Wednesday.

On the other hand, the Flyers are coming off a victory against Duquesne on Wednesday, winning 88-73.

Sophomore guard Trey Landers shared the key factors to Dayton’s offensive production against Duquesne.

“Nobody wants to play on defense for 24 seconds so it is all about getting the ball and hitting shots,” he said.

Saturday’s game at VCU will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network, channel 509 on Flyer Cable.
