Concussion-like symptoms crush Ryan Bass’ season, Dayton roster down to 7

Redshirt senior point guard Ryan Bass finds his 2014-15 season, and possible collegiate career, come to a close following a program press release Saturday.

Bass suffered a concussion during an early November practice week prior to the Puerto Rico tip-off, but sustained concussion-like symptoms the morning after Dayton’s Dec. 30 home matchup with Ole Miss.

“I feel bad for Ryan, but his health has to be everyone’s first concern,” Dayton Head Coach Archie Miller said. “I’m hoping he will stay connected with the program and go through Senior Day. He can continue to be a positive factor with us. He’s just that kind of person.”

The Dayton-native, who played at both Dunbar and Chaminade-Julienne High Schools, transferred to Dayton after three years at Oakland University.

Bass appeared in eight of 12 games for the Flyers as Dayton’s backup point guard to sophomore Scoochie Smith.

Against Boston University five days before Christmas, Bass scored a season-high eight points, and poured in 20 minutes on the road at Arkansas.

The announcement comes just weeks after the Dec. 17 scandal that dismissed juniors Jalen Robinson and Devon Scott from the program. Dayton’s roster following the loss of Bass now leaves only seven scholarship student athletes available to Miller.

Until junior transfer Detwon Rogers recovers from patellar tendonitis, Dayton will only have six scholarship players and junior walk-on Bobby Werhli.
