Matt Affolder will not return as head coach of the University of Dayton volleyball program, according to a university press release from Monday, Dec. 16.

Affolder was hired Jan. 18 to replace outgoing coach Kelly Sheffield, who is now head coach at the University of Wisconsin. He was an assist under Sheffield for five seasons, helping lead Dayton to the NCAA tournament each season, as well as four consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference championships.

“We appreciate Matt’s efforts in his six years here at the university,” University of Dayton Vice President and Director of Athletics Tim Wabler said in the press release. “We look forward to bringing in a new head coach as soon as possible and move our volleyball program forward.”

Dayton finished 16-13 and in fifth place in the A-10 during the 2013 season. This was the first time the team has not won at least 20 games or finished in the top two of the conference since 2000.

No additional details about Affolder’s removal were given at the time of the press release.
