Subterranean brings ‘St. Valentine’s Funky Massacre’ to Ladder 11

Feeling badly about spending another Valentine’s Day weekend with Netflix and discount chocolate? Not sure where to take an awkward first date for a holiday with such big expectations? Look no further, as Dayton’s very own Subterranean is putting on a fan appreciation show at Jimmie’s Ladder Eleven on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Formerly the Subterranean House Band, the four guys got their start playing Wednesday nights at J-Alan’s, a former Dayton bar. All the members are “music veterans in their own rights,” based on projects they have previously worked on.

“The chemistry between the members was instantly undeniable and we became a band with a capital B,” said Chris Coalt Jr., vocalist and guitarist for Subterranean. “We quickly entered the festival circuit and expanded from there.”

Attendees of the Feb. 13 show who are not already fans of Subterranean should know the band’s sound is progressive and improvisational electric rock ‘n’ roll. Along with Coalt, members Danny Sauers, saxophone, Rob Brockman, drums, and Chuckie Love, bass, all sing.

No two songs are ever played the same way. The band doesn’t want to play by the rules.

While each Subterranean show is a little bit different, they promise that each of their shows will make you want to get up and dance.

Some of the band’s biggest influences are The Beatles, Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley and Rage Against the Machine, but they love the freedom of cultivating their own original sounds.

Subterranean is especially excited for their Valentine’s Day weekend show, as it is a fan appreciation event. The show is free to benefit both returning fans and University of Dayton students who may want to check them out for the first time. There will be raffles for upcoming music festivals such as Hookah in the Hot Tub and Alchemy Rising, which will give attendees a chance to see Subterranean again.

“Whether [UD] students realize it or not, it is in the human DNA to enjoy live arts,” Coalt said. “Everything is organic, we play all our own instruments and seeing someone perform and create something they love so much is something to witness.”

Whether you come for the free snacks and drinks or the chance to dance and experience some live music, Subterranean promises their passion this Valentine’s Day weekend.

Subterranean will play at Jimmie’s Ladder 11, 936 Brown St. Dayton, from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. There is no cover charge for the show. For more information, visit subtmusic.com.
