Crime Log - October 25, 2005
The following incidents were reported to the Department of Public Safety between October 12 and October 18. This log was compiled by Flyer News from actual police reports obtained from the Department of Public Safety.Theft
October 12, 2:22 p.m.
Officer Arnold met with a UD student at Benisek Hall regarding a possible credit card fraud. The complainant stated he had checked his Day Air Credit Union Checking account and discovered a charge of $197.00 had been placed without his knowledge. The complainant immediately called Day Air Credit Union to report the fraudulent charge, changed his account numbers and had his Visa Check Card canceled. He stated the charge was through a billing company named 'www.bfiti.net,' and when he contacted 'www.bfiti.net,' he was told it is a billing company which controls billing for several companies over the internet. The complainant was informed the charge was billed by www.getagrant.com. He attempted to contact the company and was unable to speak with anyone there who would assist him in this matter. Officer Arnold located a website for www.get-a-grant.com which appeared to be some type of scheme for applying for grants. The complainant stated he had not used his check card on any website other than www.videoprofessor.com.
Telephone Harassment
October 13, 5:00 p.m.
A UD student met with Officer Cloyd at Benisek Hall to report that she had been receiving phone calls from an unknown person or company requesting money. The caller stated that she was from the litigation department at a financial institution and was calling about a loan taken out in Ohio in 2002. She then requested personal information. The student, who had resided in Michigan in 2002, asked her father to try to contact the institution through a phone number that had been provided. He was unsuccessful.
Theft
October 14, 1:17 p.m.
A UD student met with Officer Parmenter at Benisek Hall to report the theft of his iPod. He stated that on the day before, while he had been attending a meeting, someone had entered his room in Marycrest and taken the iPod. The student was able to provide a make, model and serial number for the iPod.
Vandalism
October 15, 11:44 p.m.
Officer Jolly responded to the Lawnview Apartments after receiving a report of damage on the second floor. Upon arrival, the officer met with a member of UD Maintenance, who stated that the exit sign on the wall had been torn off, damaging the wires and the circuit for all of the lights in the hallway. None of the lights were functioning and the maintenance employee stated that he had tried turning the circuit breaker on and off, but that it was burned out. The cost for repairs was estimated to be $79.99 for the sign and $40 an hour for the electrician to repair the lights on a weekend night.
Theft
October 18, 12:30 p.m.
Officer Arnold was dispatched to Reichard Hall on a report of a theft of a musical instrument. He met with the complainant, a UD faculty member, who stated that some time between 1 p.m. on October 17 and 12 p.m. on October 18, a Yamaha brand Tenor Saxophone was stolen from a storage closet in Reichard Hall. The saxophone was owned by the University of Dayton and was valued and approximately $1500. The complainant stated the building was locked from approximately 11 p.m. on October 17 to approximately 7 a.m. on October 18. He also stated he taught a class from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on October 17 and it is possible the suspect came into the room during that class and removed the saxophone.
