Volleyball heading to Cincy for Atlantic 10 Tourney

The UD volleyball team had a chance to earn a share of the Atlantic 10 regular season title last weekend, but a loss to first-place Temple put an end to those hopes.

Now, the Flyers have a chance for what really matters, the A-10 Tournament Championship.

UD will make the trek down I-75 to the Cintas Center this weekend for the four-team A-10 Tournament.

Head coach Pete Hoyer summed up the team's goal heading into the tournament as succinctly as possible.

'Our goal is to win it,' Hoyer said.

And that's not an unreasonable goal.

The second-seeded Flyers, who finished the regular season with a 22-6 record and an 11-3 conference mark, will take on No. 3 seed George Washington in the semi-finals. The Flyers and Colonials have met twice this year and each team won on the other's home court.

In the first meeting between the two, which came Sept. 28 at the Frericks Center, George Washington won 3-2 in a hard-fought and close match.

Less than a month later, the Flyers traveled to Washington, D.C. and returned the favor, topping the Colonials 3-1.

Getting past the Colonials Friday is obviously the first priority.

'I think we need to get in the championship match,' Hoyer said. 'And once we're there, we need to be in a position to win.'

In the other semifinal match, the host Xavier Musketeers, seeded fourth, will take on No. 1 seed Temple.

It will be a familiar situation for both teams. One week ago, Temple lost its only conference game of the season at Xavier.

If the Musketeers can pull off another upset, it would be a bonus for the Flyers if they advance to the championship because they would not have to play the Temple team that handed them two defeats.

But, even if that doesn't happen, Hoyer thinks the Flyers will have a good shot to beat whoever they end up playing.

'We have to come back and play aggressive volleyball,' Hoyer said. 'If we can do that, then we can be ready to fulfill our goals.'

The semifinal match is set for 5 p.m. tonight, and the championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
