I attended a talk on Buddhism by the Tibetan Buddhist lama Khenpo Sherab Oser in the Chudd Auditorium on Tuesday. The talk started a few minutes past the scheduled time of 7 p.m. However, people kept walking in even beyond 7:40 p.m.
To make matters worse, other people had started to leave after barely half an hour of the talk. Not only was this disrespectful to our speaker, the thuds of doors closing and the tapping of people's shoes on the stone floor were very distracting to those wanting to pay attention to the words of the lama. Every other minute or so, one would be disturbed by movement and sound as someone made either a delayed entrance to or a premature exit from the talk.
I for one was very disappointed, as I had not seen this disregard displayed by UD students at any other function I have attended.
Certainly, one or two people may have had emergencies that could not be ignored, but the mass exodus I was forced to experience was very frustrating and annoying.
I hope this was a one time 'bad day' and that our community will observe, as it has always done, the punctuality and decorum expected at these events.
